Jailer 2‘s record-breaking overseas run has hit an unexpected roadblock. York Cinemas has announced that it will stop screening the Rajinikanth film from Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
The theatre says the decision is out of its hands.
What York Cinemas Said
In an official notice to its patrons, York Cinemas said it has fulfilled all required financial commitments and payments for the film. But it has not received the valid KDMs needed to keep screening Jailer 2.
According to the notice, the KDMs have not been provided by the film’s North American distributors, Shloka Entertainments and Prathyangira Cinemas, following the required authorisation from the production company, Sun Pictures.
“Without valid KDMs, we are technically unable to continue screening the film,” the theatre said.
York Cinemas added that it had “made every effort to resolve this matter” but the necessary authorisation was not received. It apologised to its patrons for the disappointment.
What Are KDMs?
KDM stands for Key Delivery Message. Films are sent to theatres as encrypted digital files, and a theatre needs a valid KDM, a digital key, to unlock and play the film.
KDMs are usually issued for a fixed time period. If a new key isn’t issued when the old one expires, the theatre simply cannot play the film, even if it has the file.
No Word Yet From the Other Side
The distributors and Sun Pictures have not responded publicly to York Cinemas’ statement yet. It’s not clear why the KDMs have been held back, and there may be another side to the story.
Bad Timing for Fans
The move comes at a time when Jailer 2 is running extremely well overseas. The film collected ₹183.25 Cr outside India in its first weekend alone, and it has crossed ₹500 Cr worldwide in just six days.
York Cinemas has been a popular destination for South Indian films in the Toronto area. Fans there will now have to look for other theatres to watch the film.
